Dealing with Weeds and Building Wood Storage in the Garden

Hi everyone!

Just a quick update on the garden front – though between being away, working, and getting ready to head off again this weekend, progress has been slow to say the least!

I did manage to tackle the raised beds, which had become a bit of a weed jungle. I figured the quickest way to deal with them all was to go over the beds with the weed whacker (yes, a strimmer 😂). The one raised bed we’re keeping now has a layer of cardboard down to try and suppress regrowth – although the dandelions clearly didn’t get the memo and are already trying to push through! I started pulling them out yesterday and will go back in for round two soon. Next step: adding soil and compost so we can finally get some potatoes going!

The cardboard we had stored in the shed (and a few pieces left outside) is looking a bit battered now, so it’s definitely time to crack on and sort the rest out.

Wood Storage

Meanwhile, Tony has been busy building a wood store. We love having fires outside and plan to bring some wood along when we go camping, so it made sense to finally get something built. Tony spotted a design he liked online and, in true Tony fashion, visualised the whole thing in his head and just got on with it.

It wasn’t a one-day project – luckily, the weather’s been on our side, so he had the time to take it slow and do it properly. He built it almost entirely from reclaimed wood: the old planter we dismantled last year (made from scaffolding boards), leftovers from the fence he built back in 2020, and a few other bits from previous DIY jobs. The only new materials he needed were a single piece of 2×2 (47X47X1800) from Wickes (costing £5.70) and some Ronseal One Coat fence protection from our local DIY store (costing £9.99).

We’re really pleased with how it’s come together – and love that it’s been made so sustainably too.

After painting the new wood storage, Tony decided to do some maintenance and painted the shed and the fence that he built in the post Fence of Dreams at the front of the house in the same Ronseal One Coat.

More garden updates soon.
